Turkish Shipping Summit 2007 Retrospective

The inaugural Turkish Shipping Summit, co-organised by Seatrade and TradeWinds, brought more than 260 delegates from 21 countries to the Ciragan Palace Kempinski to hear from leading industry representatives from home and abroad.

Honouring the event was Minister of Transport, Binali Yildirim accompanied by Undersecretary for Maritime Affairs Ismet Yilmaz. Mr. Yildirim spoke in detail about the government¹s priorities for the maritime industries. Philip Embiricos, president of the Baltic and International Maritime Council Organization (BIMCO) delivered the opening speech, while chairman of the Turkish Chamber of Shipping, Metin Kalkavan also addressed welcome remarks to the delegates.

Leading researchers analysed the dry and wet freight markets and Lee Kirk, head the capesize desk of major charterer BHP Biliton offered some tips on what Turkish owners need to do to meet charterers¹ requirements.

The second session of the busy morning, saw discussion on subjects of particular interest to the home industry, including the improving image of Turkish shipping, asset play and how the younger generation is changing Turkish shipping.

After a buffet lunch, which allowed delegates to network and meet up with old friends and new, the Summit got underway again with the whole afternoon devoted to the fast-expanding Turkish shipbuilding industry.

Farewell drinks gave a final opportunity for exchanging views with fellow delegates and the general consensus of opinion was; Roll on Turkish Shipping Summit 2008.
